9th – 13th July, 2018
A 5-days workshop on Applied Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics was organized by Center for Health and Disease Studies-Nepal (CHDS-Nepal) which was targeted for individuals with interest in learning basic microbiological, molecular and bioinformatics tools and techniques. It was tutored by Dr. Deena Shrestha, Chairperson of CHDS-Nepal, Mr. Bivek Timalsina, Scientific Manager of CHDS-Nepal, assisted by Mrs. Samikshya Kafle and Ms. Upasana Shrestha, Mrs. Rojita Tuladhar, Mr. Satya Raj Paudel, from CHDS and also volunteered by Ms. Sumeena Thapa Karki and Ms. Apshara Parajuli from Central Department of Biotechnology, Tribhuwan University. The module was prepared by Dr. Roshan Lal Shrestha, Mr. Bivek Timalsina, Dr. Bijay Bajracharya, Dr. Deena Shrestha.
There was a total of 9 participants including 2 who skipped Microbiology session. Conducted from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm, the hands-on training was provided along with detailed lecture on basic microbiological procedures (serial dilution, spread plate method, pure culture, streak plate method, microscopy, culture, biochemical tests and antibiotic susceptibility testing), DNA extraction (Genomic and Plasmid; Manual and Kit-based), Polymerase Chain Reaction, Agarose Gel electrophoresis, Restriction Digestion and Competent cell preparation and transformation. Additionally, both theoretical and practical class on primer design, restriction mapping, designing phylogeny tree, BLAST and sequence alignment was run on the last day.
In overall, the 5-days workshop was successful in teaching participants to employ various microbiological and molecular techniques in their future career and the devotion shown by the participants in learning can’t be exaggerated.
